Arabian Horse Association Votes to Remain Under USEF Governance; Will Continue to Study Sustaining Relationship

Published Date: Aug 13, 2019

The Arabian Horse Association (AHA) Board of Directors voted to remain under the governance of the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF), but will continue to study the viability of its relationship. The unanimous vote was cast Aug. 2 during the AHA Board of Directors meeting in Aurora, CO.

During last year’s AHA Annual Convention, an ad hoc committee was tasked with thoroughly examining pressing issues and then coming up with a final report to present to the Board of Directors during the August 2019 meeting. In exploring other options, the ad hoc committee focused on topics such as: horse welfare, violation and penalties, licensing of officials, drug testing, rule book development, bylaw changes and other aspects of AHA’s affiliation with USEF. The final report to the Board cites numerous financial and regulatory obstacles in withdrawing from USEF.

Due to the American Saddlebred Horse Association’s (ASHA’s) ongoing working relationship with AHA, we have asked for details of the AHA review and elements that led to this decision, so that it can be shared with our membership.

AHA is a major equine association serving 85,000 Arabian, Half-Arabian and Anglo-Arabian horse owners and 219 clubs across North America. AHA registers and maintains a database of more than one million Arabian, Half-Arabian and Anglo-Arabian horses and administers about $1 million in annual prize money. AHA produces five championship events, recognizes more than 344 Arabian horse shows and distance rides, and provides activities, education, and programs that promote breeding, ownership, and membership.
