ASR Diplomat of the Breed – Very Scary
ASR Diplomat Of The Breed - January 2019
We are pleased to announce the January 2019 ASR Diplomat of the Breed is Very Scary (148109M). She is an American Saddlebred that proves life is an adventure and she is always along for the ride. Her registered name may be Very Scary, but she is best known as “Very Social” for all her work to #sharethesaddlebred! Very Scary, affectionately known as “Buffy” is a 9-year-old black mare that with the help of her loving human mother, Jillian Tsiplakis, she brings the versatility and adaptability of the American Saddlebred to new people every day.
While becoming a breed ambassador is something “Buffy” has grown into, her power for creating relationships has always come naturally. She was an essential part of the transition home for her owner upon her return from Tsiplakis’s deployment to Afghanistan. Tsiplakis is a US Army Veteran who through the special bond she formed with “Buffy” was able to form an everlasting friendship and support system for her acclimation back into civilian life.
In the early years, they worked together to grow and train to pursue being able to debut in the show ring. A lifelong American Saddlebred enthusiast, Tsiplakis was searching for the horse that would be the perfect partner to give the thrill in the ring only an American Saddlebred can. While they always took their training very seriously, Tsiplakis found it essential in the offseason to still expose and enjoy a variety of activities with “Buffy.” Trail riding and taking on jumping were a regular part of their winters. “Buffy” now holds her regular day job as an Amateur Park horse who can be found showing throughout the New England circuit. This well-rounded approach to Very Scary’s early training has proved as an excellent foundation for the promotional events she finds herself at these days.
To date, Buffy has introduced a variety of new riders to trail riding, jumping, saddle seat, and the breed. She is regularly able to attend clinics in the greater New Hampshire area that allows her to share the fabulous tractability of the American Saddlebred. Whether it is through introducing children from community outreach programs to a horse for the first time or as a viral sensation as a Brides-Neighed in her owner’s wedding, Buffy is a poster child for breed promotion. In this past year alone Very Scary was in the Portsmouth Christmas Parade that boasts an attendance of over 6,000 people and was the highlight at a Working Cattle Horse Clinic where she learned how to do Team Penning! To begin with, no one could believe a Saddlebred was at the clinic, but they were especially impressed when she was the star student! Her prowess in the unconventional activity for an American Saddlebred Park horse garnered her quite the fan club. The clinician loved her so much she even took Buffy for a spin herself!
As her owner shares, “Buffy is a very personable horse and thrives on getting love and attention. She is always excited for any new challenge I present to her and gives 100% every day whether it’s in the show ring, at one of our various activities, or just hanging out enjoying a lazy day off with me.”
This month’s Diplomat of the Breed exemplifies the standard of representing the American Saddlebred effectively to a wide array of equine enthusiasts. We are thankful for all the efforts Very Scary, and her connections make to represent the best traits of the breed and expose more people to how great the American Saddlebred can perform no matter the task!
